India: Seeing Men

Four separate trips to India and many cities later I succumb to the obvious, the most readily available, men. Men jam the streets of Delhi, Agra, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Varnasi, Mumbai, Guruvayur, Hyderabad and more. With a show of my camera, a questioning raise of my eyebrow to indicate my desire for a portrait, I wait for the 1/4 head waggle to proceed - comparing it to the American equivalent of, “yeah”. Shooting men on the streets of India feels done, but I honor what is before me and wait for the unfolding, the moment, the distraction, the spark.

India is typically revealed in full coloration, and why not, the colors are abundant, gorgeous, enticing. I decide upon a mixture of monochrome to full color, picking my color placement carefully to reveal a mood, or elevate the singular strength of that hue. Using color or the lack thereof as a tool to sharpen the focus of my subjects.

This project is on-going and I look forward to more visits to India in the near future.
