In her series “Domestic Bliss”, photographer Susan Copich depicts the exact opposite of her title. Copich places herself in each image as the primary member of the household; a depressed, frustrated, and angry housewife. With elements of humor and satire geared towards domestic life, Copich creates an individual narrative for each photograph by highlighting the specific turmoils that her characters are struggling with. While Copich’s character is consistently prominent throughout the series, the character of her spouse is shown as absent yet present. His physical presence is seen, but she makes it clear that he is a seemingly inessential part of the family. With all the images combined, the series takes on the form of a photographic survey depicting a head-of-household’s worst nightmares.
